How The Whimsical Writing Studio Began.
Front Royal, VA, homeowner and author L.B. Stimson bought her new writing shed in late 2023. Once delivered, she quickly began customizing the interior, with plans to create a garden around it. Her theme was a “whimsical, Gothic design with a beachy edge.” Follow along with Stimson’s months-long journey as she transforms her bare-bones shed into a unique writing space to spark creativity year-round.

“I’ve been working hard to get my new writing space completed. This week, my husband taught me how to hang drywall. I’m sore but excited to prime the walls and paint them a lovely, haint blue.”
People in the southern United States traditionally use haint blue, especially on porch ceilings and door and window frames. This color symbolizes spiritual protection, deters insects, reflects Southern cultural traditions and adds a calming look to homes and outdoor spaces.

Stimson and her husband built most of the interior furniture, including two wooden tables with teal and orange hairpin legs and a comfy swivel chair. For decor, Winfred the owl hangs from a perch, ladder shelves display personal treasures and wall art is soon to follow.

Stimson finds her writing influenced by eerie atmospheres and historical mysteries. Her stories of modern Gothic horror unfold slowly. They blend ghostly elements with rich, atmospheric settings, creating captivating, chilling tales.
Beyond writing, Stimson is passionate about photography, travel and history. She says, “I’m thrilled to create fiction that lets me share these passions. One of my favorite parts is the historical research that brings authenticity to my characters’ lives.”
